Dorian LPG, one of maritime shipping’s leading liquified petroleum gas (LPG) carriers, uses Wayfinder to optimize performance and accelerate decarbonization across its full fleet of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC). In 2024, Dorian LPG vessels following Wayfinder’s dynamic voyage optimization significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions, saving an average of 9% on fuel per voyage.
Dorian LPG’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy spotlights “Optimizing Fleet Performance” as one of its key pillars. This strategic priority drives investment in operational efficiency improvements that minimize environmental impact, including voyage optimization.
Dorian LPG evaluated multiple voyage optimization and weather routing providers before identifying Wayfinder as the best platform for its fleet. In particular, Dorian LPG valued Wayfinder’s highly accurate marine weather intelligence, which is powered by the world’s largest private network of real-time ocean sensors.
“We view weather routing and route optimization as core pillars in our efforts to save fuel and decarbonize both our fleet and the industry,” said Peter Hadjipateras, Chief Information, Security and Sustainability Officer at Dorian LPG. “Over the years, we have evaluated several leading routing software solutions, and subjected Sofar’s Wayfinder platform to an intensive 18-month trial. We have watched their product mature into a best-in-class routing algorithm, supported by what we believe is the finest proprietary weather network available and a user-friendly interface.”
Wayfinder combines its superior marine weather insights with the latest market and vessel performance data to deliver daily optimized RPM and route guidance to Dorian LPG vessels. This dynamic guidance maximizes the safety, efficiency, and profitability of every voyage; in 2024, Dorian LPG vessels using Wayfinder saved an average of:
A critical input to Wayfinder’s guidance is its highly accurate vessel performance model (VPM), which forecasts a ship’s fuel consumption and speed in different sea states. Wayfinder’s VPM is continuously calibrated using the latest marine weather, market, and vessel performance data, and predicts fuel consumption within 2% MT and speed within 0.5 kts. These highly accurate predictions unlock more precise RPM and route guidance and increased fuel and emissions savings.
“Dorian LPG’s results demonstrate how Sofar's real-time marine weather intelligence improves operational efficiency and sustainability,” said Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar Ocean. “Wayfinder’s dynamic voyage optimization significantly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, while improving overall fleet performance. We are proud to support Dorian LPG’s decarbonization efforts and look forward to our continued partnership.”
Dorian LPG will expand its use of Wayfinder to support the rollout of new decarbonization technologies, such as energy-saving systems and dual-fuel engines. Wayfinder’s VPM accurately measures the effect of these advancements on a vessel’s performance, and adjusts its optimized guidance to maximize their impact on voyage safety, efficiency, and profitability.
“We are grateful for the approach Sofar Ocean has taken and look forward to continuing our partnership as it remains a key lever in our decarbonization strategy,“ said Hadjipateras. “These results highlight the potential of leveraging advanced technologies to enhance both operational performance and sustainability efforts.”
